There indeed is a lot of misunderstanding prevailing among Muslims, as well as non-Muslims, about the Islamic point of view of celebration. There are Muslims who imagine that any kind of celebration is out of place, since this world is ephemeral and is meant as a testing ground for humans. When we say we respect someone, how is different from loving that person? Think about it; when you love someone, you want to give them something that will make them happy. When you respect somebody, you are willing  to listen and take from what they say. For humans, it’s part of our nature that it’s easier for us to give advice than to take advice. It’s easier for us to reprimand someone than to get reprimanded ourselves. So using the same analogy, we can safely say that it’s easier to love someone than to show them respect. Allah tells us in the Quran about people who will be the losers (with respect to their deeds) on the Day of Judgment.
