Allah tells us in the Quran about people who will be the losers (with respect to their deeds) on the Day of Judgment. Here are the verses from Surah Kahf about those people. losers-kahf1 The Quran Tafsir by Mohsin Khan states that for the acceptance of the righteous deeds it is stipulated that the following two basic conditions must be fulfilled: The intentions while doing such deeds must be totally for Allâh’s sake only without any show-off or to gain praise or fame. Such a deed must be performed in accordance with the Sunnah of Allâh’s Messenger Muhammad bin ‘Abdullâh , the last of the Prophets and the Messengers. Narrated Aishah that Allâh’s Messenger said, “If somebody innovates something which is not present in our religion (of Islâmic Monotheism), then that thing will be rejected.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari, Vol.3, Hadith No.861). In another Hadith narrated Aishah: The Prophet said: “Whoever performs a (good) deed which we have not ordered (anyone) to do (or is not in accord with...

Verily, that is easy for Allah.” (Quran, Surah Hadeed: 22) The prophet (S.A.W.S.) said: Narrated Ibn ‘Abbas, Once I was behind the Prophet and he said: "O boy, I will teach you a few words: Be loyal and obedient to Allâh [worship Him (Alone)], remember Him always, obey His Orders. He will save you from every evil and will take care of you in all the spheres of life. Be loyal and obedient to Allâh, you will find Him near (in front of you) i.e. He will respond to your requests. If you ask, ask Allâh. If you seek help, seek help from Allâh. Know that if all the people get together in order to benefit you with so...

This article by Skeikh ul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah answers the following questions: Is reason self sufficient for the acquisition of all knowledge? What is the role of revelation in acquisition of knowledge? Within the religious context, should reason be completely suppressed? What about people who completely depend on reason and even discredit the teachings of the prophet? Ibn Taymiyyah has written extensively on this topic. In his introduction of the book “Ibn Taymiyyah Expounds on Islam”, Dr. Muhammad `Abdul-Hagq Ansari, Researcher in the Deanery of Academic Research at Al-Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University (Saudi-Arabia) states the following: Reason is the next principle of Ibn Taymiyyah’s innovative work. He says that God created man with a particular nature, fitrah. The beliefs, values and the principles of Islamic life and society have their roots in this fitrah. Islam is the religion of fitrah. And the whole purpose of Islam is the perfection of man on the...

When we remember Allah, He remembers us. Let’s reflect on the following verse and some of the the Ahadith of the prophet to see the benefits of remembering Allah. remember-Allah Translation of the verse: “Therefore remember Me (by praying, glorifying), I will remember you, and be grateful to Me (for My countless Favors on you) and never be ungrateful to Me.” Quran (2:152) Narrated Abu Hurairah The Prophet said, "Allah says, I am just as My slave thinks I am, (i.e. I am Able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him) and I am with him if he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in himself, I too, remember him in Myself; and if he remembers Me in a group of people, I remember him in a group that is better than them; and if he comes one span nearer to Me, I go one cubit nearer to him; and if he comes one cubit nearer to Me, I go a distance of two outstretched arms nearer to him; and if he comes to Me walking, I go to him running. (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.9, Hadîth No.502). And Abu Dawoo...

The Sunnah (traditions) of the Prophet SAWS, along with Quran , is the cornerstone of the teachings of Islam . Among majority of the scholars, the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad SAWS is defined as the sayings (Hadith Qauli or the verbal order), actions (Hadith Fa’lee or the action) or approval of actions (Hadith Taqreeri) that are related to the beliefs as well as rulings of the Islamic faith – both in terms of rituals as well as daily life actions. The Sunnah has one of three roles when it comes to a ruling. It emphasizes what is mentioned in Quran. e.g., the emphasis in many aHadith (Plural of Hadith) on the importance of prayers similar to what is mentioned in the Quran; It explains what has come as a ruling in Quran. e.g., the number of daily prayers and the number of rakaa’h in each prayer. It initiates a ruling that is binding upon the followers of the religion of Islam. e.g., forbidding eating the flesh of donkey. Throughout the history, people attacking ...

Thinking about and trying to understand meanings of the Glorious Quran, which Allah has sent down for His slaves to clarify all things and as a Light that He gives to whom He wills among His slaves. Indeed, the Quran contains tremendous medicine for all ills of the heart, as Allah said, what translated means, "And We sent down from the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy to those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism)." [17:82] ...The Quran contains Islamic Monotheism; Allah’s promises, warnings and Commandments; stores of previous nations; and codes of the best conduct and behavior. These various subjects in the Quran have different effects on the heart. Some Surahs (chapters) of the Quran are more frightening than others. The Messenger of Allah said, what translated means, "Hud (chapter 11) and its sisters (chapters 56, 77, 78 and 81) have brought me white hairs before their due time." [As-Silsilah As-Sahihah]. Hud and its sisters brought white hairs to...

The Future of American Muslims – Is There a Vision?

In July 2009, Rick Warren, a popular evangelical Christian pastor was the keynote speaker at the ISNA ( Islamic Society of North America) conference. Pastor Warren’s speech was welcomed by many American Muslim organizations, leaders and community members. This is because the expression of friendship by such a leader in a conference attended by 45,000 Muslims was first of its kind in America. His speech was perceived by American Muslims as a positive step in helping to bridge any misunderstandings between Muslims and Christians of America. However it can be easily argued that to many American Muslims, his coming to the conference signified a symbol of their acceptance in the American society. While Pastor Warren’s friendly presence may have sent that message, the contents of his speech underscored how American Muslims’ efforts to position themselves in the American society may have been falling short. This was clear from many of his comments. For example, during the p...

Trials, tribulations and challenges are part of every person’s life. However, to counter that, Allah has provided us a very powerful tool – and that is the tool of du’a or asking Allah for help and his mercy when we need it. And we need it all the time… However, to understand trials and tribulations that we face in our daily lives, we also need to understand the topic of "Sins" and how our sins may be related to our trials and tribulations. The better we understand the ghastly nature of our sins, and the rate at which we accumulate them, along with their undesirable impact on our daily lives and the hereafter, the more it can propel us away from committing sins in general and the more it will drive us to seek forgiveness for our sins – through making the right Dua’s for us and for others. Ibn Qayyim provided one of the great descriptions of sins and the impact of sins in this life and after. Here is a very short summary of what he compiled abo...

In his book Al-Fawaid, Ibn-Qayyim mentions two ways of knowing Allah . The first is by observing His creation – Allah says in the Quran – Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, and the ships which sail through the sea with that which is of use to mankind, and the water (rain) which Allah sends down from the sky and makes the earth alive therewith after its death, and the moving (living) creatures of all kinds that He has scattered therein, and in the veering of winds and clouds which are held between the sky and the earth, are indeed Ayat (proofs, evidences, signs, etc.) for people of understanding. [Quran – Al-Baqara 2:164] The Quran also states: Those who remember Allah (always, and in prayers) standing, sitting, and lying down on their sides, and think deeply about the creation of the heavens and the earth, (saying): “Our Lord! You have not created (all) this without purpose, glory to You! (Exalted...
Words of Wisdom by Luqman

Wisdom provides us with the capacity to solve real life problems. So, acquiring wisdom becomes a must if we want to live meaningful lives. As we live through life and its experiences, it is vital that we reflect on such experiences to make our subsequent steps in life easier. As Immanuel Kant, a famous philosopher said that “Science is organized knowledge. Wisdom is organized life.” So, if wisdom enables a person to make more sound decisions, take a shortcut path to success, recalibrate values for the better, and simply live a better life, then why not spend time reflecting on our own experiences as well as learning from others? As Will Durant, a renowned philosopher and Pulitzer Prize winner stated, “A wise man can learn from another man’s experience; a fool cannot learn even from his own.” The words of the Quran and teachings of our prophet Muhammad guide us to a wealth of wisdom and knowledge. In fact, Allah calls Quran the “Book of wisdom” in many places in t...
